Kolb-Sabino Canyon Rd. Connection

This was the scene last August as crews from Ashton Contractors and Engineers poured the northbound lanes of the Kolb Road connection .

Many on Tucson’s east side have been eagerly waiting for the North Kolb Road-North Sabino Canyon Road connection to be completed, and that wait ends Thursday.

At 2 p.m., there will be a public dedication of the new Airmen Memorial Bridge, which now crosses the Pantano Wash. After that, motorists can make their way back and forth between Sabino and Kolb without using the often-congested Tanque Verde-Kolb intersection.

The bridge is named in honor of a 1944 midair tragedy in which two B-24 bombers collided over the wash, killing 18 airmen. Work on the $12.3 million RTA project started in December 2015.

For those wishing to attend, there will be public parking at adjacent Udall Park east of the swimming pool and a shuttle to take participants the rest of the way.

Before the ribbon-cutting, the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Honor Guard will do a presentation of colors ceremony.
