Ajo Highway construction

Traffic snakes through a curve near Old Ajo Way and Arizona 86, the Ajo Highway, between Kinney and Valencia roads west of Tucson. The Arizona Department of Transportation is widening this segment of the Ajo Highway to two lanes in each direction. The project includes work on guardrails, bridge railings, signs and striping.

Starting Thursday, May 25, at 4 p.m., traffic on Arizona 86 will be shifted to the south side of the road at milepost 162, west of the Camino Verde intersection.

The restriction is intended to accommodate bridge work, which is expected to conclude by early Friday morning, according to a news release from the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Crews and traffic-control devices will be in place to control traffic through the area, and business access will be maintained.

The work is part of the larger widening of the Ajo Highway between Valencia and Kinney roads.

The entire project is expected to be finished by the summer of 2018.
