Major upgrade to Ina Road railroad crossing approved

Once the project is complete, auto traffic will no longer have to wait for trains to pass.

A $120 million overhaul of the Ina Road-Interstate 10 interchange was set to kick off today, with crews working on nearby frontage roads and elsewhere to prepare for work that will eventually take Ina up and over the Union Pacific railroad and the interstate.

Between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, eastbound I-10 will narrow to one lane from Cortaro Road to Ina, where the off-ramp will also be closed. For the same time period on Thursday and Friday, westbound I-10 will be closed from Orange Grove Road to Ina, where that off-ramp will be closed.

Ina will be narrowed to one lane in both directions near the interstate overnight on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as all of the week of July 17-22, so crews can remove and repave center median islands.

Lane closures on the eastbound frontage road will continue during the day, and by the end of July the westbound frontage road will close for the remainder of 2016.

The Arizona Department of Transportation suggests alternate routes that avoid the area .

Larger-scale construction will begin in early 2017, when Ina will be closed for two years to accommodate building of the overpass and interchange.
