Steve Gall, center, helped a young refugee get to soccer practice.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Steve Gall.

Nominated by: Michael Helfand.

Why: For making a difference in a young student’s life. Gall is a gym teacher who works with refugee children. For the last year Gall has helped Jules Komya, who is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, get back and forth to soccer practice and weekend games. He doesn’t live near the practice location, but Gall wanted to make sure Jules was participating in a good soccer environment, Helfand wrote in his nomination letter. Gall volunteers at tournaments and other events. He has also done some fundraising to assist Jules, who is on a partial scholarship. “Gall is a great guy who is making the life of a great kid that much better,” Helfand wrote.
