Michael Thomas Payne mugshot

One man is dead after an altercation behind a residence on Tucson’s east side Saturday night.

Officers responded to a report of a fight in the 2300 block of South Saddleback Avenue, east of South Pantano Road and East Golf Links Road, at around 8:30 p.m., according to a news release from Tucson police.

Upon arrival, they discovered 63-year-old Gary Rachal in the alley behind a residence with what appeared to be multiple stab wounds, the news release said.

Officers and members of Tucson Fire rendered first aid, but Rachal succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives determined that Rachal was fighting with 38-year-old Michael Thomas Payne in the alley when Rachal was stabbed, the news release said.

Payne, who had been staying at a nearby residence, was apprehended shortly after. He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and booked into the Pima County jail.

The investigation is ongoing.
