Two men are facing numerous charges after sheriff's officials said they carjacked a woman near a Pima Community College campus and drove away with her infant still in the vehicle.
At about 9 a.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 4600 block of West Calle Don Thomas. When they arrived, deputies saw several people trying to remove license plates from vehicles in the neighborhood. The suspicious people fled in a car and deputies pursued them to the area near PCC's Desert Vista campus, 5900 block of South Calle Santa Cruz, according to a Pima County sheriff's news release.
Pursuing deputies saw two men use handguns to carjack a vehicle occupied by a woman and several of her children. The suspects struck a patrol vehicle as they drove out of a parking lot with the woman's car.
As deputies pursued the vehicle, they learned the woman's 9-month-old child was still inside the vehicle. The vehicle was driven erratically and suffered extensive damage, including losing a tire, which caused the vehicle to stop in the area of South Country Club Road and East Fairland Stravenue.
Two men ran from the vehicle but were later arrested by deputies. Deputies found the infant unharmed inside the vehicle.
Fabian Garcia, 25, and Antonio Morales Jr., 22, are each facing nine counts of aggravated assault, one count of kidnapping, one count of aggravated robbery, one count of armed robbery and one count of vehicle theft. Garcia is also facing a charge of unlawful flight from a law enforcement officer.
