A Honolulu-based restaurant chain has opened its first Tucson location.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue is now open at 4210 N. First Ave., near East Limberlost Drive. It is the chain’s third Arizona restaurant.

“The community here loves Hawaii and is thrilled to have authentic Hawaiian plate lunches,” Tucson owner Rilii Nakano said.

The Tucson restaurant is one of four the Hawaiian chain has recently opened. The 72-year-old restaurant now has 228 locations throughout the U.S. and Japan since becoming a franchise in 1999.

It specializes in “plate lunch” which is also known as “the state food of Hawaii” and dates to wage laborers in 19th-century sugar plantations and pineapple fields, who brought rice and other leftovers to work in tins and shared home recipes from Japan, China, Philippines, Portugal and Korea.

Menu items include barbecue meats, rice plates and Spam Musubi.

L&L also has restaurants in Yuma and Phoenix.
