STK emergency

An 18-year-old motorcyclist died a day after police say he was seriously injured trying to avoid a collision with another vehicle.

About 10:30 p.m. Monday, Athen Riley was riding west on West Speedway when he took evasive action to avoid colliding with an eastbound vehicle that was turning left onto North Stone Avenue, Tucson police said in a news release.

Initial information indicates Riley made an evasive maneuver to avoid the collision, left the road and struck a concrete structure. The impact threw him into a second concrete structure, the news release said.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died Tuesday, police said.

Police say Riley, who was wearing a helmet, was traveling above the 35 mph speed limit. They say his speed and the other driver's failure to yield are contributing factors in the wreck.

The crash is still being investigated.
