lights and sirens

A man was struck and killed early Saturday when police say he was struck by a vehicle as he ran across a street on Tucson's south side.

The driver of a Toyota RAV4 was westbound on Valencia Road, near South Sixth Avenue about 2:30 a.m., when Gabriel Ramirez, 41, tried to run across the street and was struck by the driver who was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision, Tucson police said in a news release. He was not in a crosswalk.

Bystanders tried to help Ramirez before police arrived, but he died soon after the wreck.

The driver remained at the scene and did not suffer injuries in the crash. No signs of impairment were identified for the driver, police said.

No arrests or citations have been issued in the ongoing investigation.
