Two people were displaced after the garage and storage unit were damaged by a Friday afternoon house fire on Tucson's south side.

Two people were displaced after their home was damaged in a Friday afternoon fire, authorities said.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., a man went outside of his home, in the 2200 block of East Highland Drive, and saw an orange glow on the house to the rear or his, said Capt. Andy Skaggs, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.

The man quickly went to the home and knocked on the door, waking the 58-year-old resident and her 7-year-old daughter, who were able to evacuate safely before firefighters arrived, Skaggs said.

When firefighters arrived, they saw that the house's attached garage and storage area were fully involved. They pulled a hose to the rear of the house, where most of the fire was focused, and "knocked" it down before making their way into the home, Skaggs said.

Firefighters cut a hole in the roof to evacuate heat and smoke from the home, but the majority of the fire damage was limited to the garage and storage area.

Eight units and 21 firefighters brought the blaze under control within nine minutes of their arrival, and no one was injured, Skaggs said.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
