Β The Pima County Sheriff's Department has ordered Vail School District to evacuate students at Pantano and Andrada Polytechnic high schools as a preventative measure.Β 

Vail schools reported on social media that there is a sinkhole near Andrada on Houghton Road and flooding north of Pantano. "We do not want students to get stuck at school," the Facebook post said.Β 

Evacuated students will be taken by bus to Cienega High School, where parents can pick their children up. Students who have their own vehicles can drive themselves home under the supervision of the sheriff's department.Β 

Heavy morning rain, especially southeast of Tucson has closed several major roads and stranded motorists between flowing washes.

The east side and southeast side have seen the heaviest rain so far today, with totals in some of the mountains to the east nearing 2 inches of rain in the last six hours, according to rainfall gauges with the Pima County Regional Flood Control District.

Also, Davidson Canyon southeast of Tucson has recorded nearly 2Β½ inches of rain in the last six hours, gauges show. Corona de Tucson also on the southeast side has had nearly 2 inches of rain during this time period.

Houghton Road is closed south of Interstate 10 because of flooded washes. Also, Harrison Road is closed at the Pantano Wash as is Silverbell Road between El Camino del Cerro and Ina Road.

  • Wentworth Road at Tanque Verde Creek
  • Old Ajo Hwy between Ajo Highway and San Joaquin Road
  • Silverbell Road between El Camino Del Cerro and Ina Road
  • Manville Rd btwn Avra Rd and Reservation Rd at the Brawley Wash
  • Old Spanish Trail East of Camino Del Garanon
  • Snyder Hill Road at end of pavement to Desert Sunrise Trail
  • San Joaquin Rd between Old Ajo Way and Bopp Rd
  • Bopp Road between San Joaquin Road to Draper Road
  • San Xavier Rd - east of Mission Rd at the Cemetery
  • Los Reales Rd - west end of Rocking K Subdivision
  • Camino Verde btwn Camino Bolivar and Valenica Rd
  • Camino Verde btwn Old Ajo Hy and Kay Lynn Dr
  • Sahuarita Rd btwn Melpomene Wy and Wentworth Rd

The National Weather Service said a flash-flood warning is in effect until about 11:30 a.m. because of the storms, some of which are capable of dropping up to an inch of rain per hour. The service has also issued an areal flood warning until 2 p.m. for much of Southeastern Arizona because of the heavy rains
