A 78-year-old woman was killed in a single-vehicle rollover near Picacho Peak Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m., said Quentin Mehr, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman.

A preliminary investigation shows that the woman, who lives in the Picacho Peak area, was traveling eastbound on I-10 and lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle traveled into the median, Mehr said.

The vehicle continued to travel into the interstate's westbound lanes and rolled, coming to rest upright on the side of the highway, said Mehr.

The woman, whose name was not released pending notification of family, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the only one in the vehicle, Mehr said.

Both westbound and eastbound lanes on I-10 were restricted because of debris, and officers conducting the investigation, said Mehr.

Traffic is slowing for several miles because only one lane in each direction remains open.
