A mother and her three children were displaced from their apartment after a fire started in the woman's bed.

A 35-year-old woman was sent to the hospital after her bed caught fire inside of her north side apartment, officials said.

Multiple 911 calls came in shortly before 1:30 a.m. Friday reporting an apartment fire in the 3000 block of North Alvernon, near East Fort Lowell Road, said Capt. Andy Skaggs, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.

The woman reported that she noticed her bed was on fire and after unsuccessfully attempting to extinguish the flames, she went to get her three children out of the apartment with the assistance of a neighbor who heard the fire, Skaggs said.

As units arrived on the scene, they were able to see smoke from the street and flames coming out of the apartment's front window. Firefighters quickly attacked the second-story apartment from the window it was coming out of before entering the unit to search for occupants and extinguish the rest of the flames, Skaggs said.

A ladder crew cut a ventilation hole in the apartment's roof to clear the unit of smoke and hot gasses.

Nine units and 23 firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control six minutes after arriving on the scene with no injuries to firefighters, Skaggs said.

The woman was transported to the hospital and her son and two daughters were taken in by a close friend. The Red Cross will be assisting the family. The resident in the apartment directly below was also displaced as a result of the blaze, Skaggs said.

Fire investigators are investigating the cause and a damage estimate is not yet available.
