Movies in a Minute: 'Space Force' & 'The Lovebirds'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says Netflix’s “Space Force” gives us an insider’s look at a military branch that’s not ready to launch. The cast is filled with actors who are capable of so much, but far too often they’re left at the launching pad, tethered when they should be shooting for the stars. “Space Force” just hits and misses. “The Lovebirds,” meanwhile, succeeds largely because its stars don’t hold back. “The Lovebirds” was supposed to fill theaters this time of year and it might have too. There’s plenty here to love, particularly the two leads.
Movies in a Minute: 'Back to the Future,' 'The Dark Knight,' 'Rocketman,' & 'Jaws'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been the kickoff to the summer blockbuster season, but you’re going to have to wait a few months for the live-action version of “Mulan” and the much-awaited sequel to “Top Gun.” Instead, make this a retro blockbuster summer. Netflix brings “Back to the Future,” and on Hulu, look for “The Dark Knight.” Amazon now has last year’s big music journey, “Rocketman,” and if you want to dig back to the first summer blockbuster, look for “Jaws” on HBO.
Movies in a Minute: 'How to Build a Girl' & 'SCOOB!'
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says a number of independent films didn’t get a showcase when theaters shut down, so they needed someplace to land. Some went to streaming services. Others, like “How to Build a Girl,” are available for rental. He says “How to Build a Girl,” tells the story of a head-shaking transformation, but it’s also a great showcase for Beanie Feldstein, who plays the main character. While director Coky Giedroyc packs too much into her film, she doesn’t give Feldstein too much to do. Also, “SCOOB!,” is about Scooby and how the gang faces their most challenging mystery ever. All members of the family should be able to dig and howl over the antics that once made them smile.
Movies in a Minute: 'Saturday Night Live,' 'Broadway,' & 'American Idol' at home
UpdatedMovie critic Bruce Miller says entertainment has moved online to services like Zoom. Because studios are prevented from shooting new films and series, networks are relying on cellphones and social media to get new material to hungry audiences. Broadway actors are the real champions of at-home entertainment. Even though news anchors have had to shift to their homes, they all have ring lights and corners that are perfect for shooting interviews. Everyone has a plant and a bookcase and, if you’re John Legend, enough awards to demonstrate why you’re considered a giant in the business.
