A wind-whipped fire in Bisbee destroyed several structures, including one vacant house, Monday evening, authorities said.
There were no injuries, and the fire was no longer spreading as of about 7:45 p.m., the Cochise County Sheriff's Office reported. The fire was expected to be under control by late Monday night, said Carol Capas, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
Christopher Long, interim deputy chief of Bisbee Police Department, said in a televised news conference that about 50 people were evacuated from historic Old Bisbee.
Long said at least four structures burned, including a vacant house.Β
Police, along with state and federal agencies, evacuated residences in the area of Moon Canyon and Locklin Avenue while multiple fire agencies, including wildland fire crews fought the blaze, Long said.
Challenges crews faced included steep hills, winds, and old structures near each other, said Long.
Mop up crews were optimistic to begin work Monday night and early Tuesday morning, Long said.
An emergency operations center was being set up at Bisbee City Hall. Anyone needing information is asked to call 520-432-6021.
Evacuees were sent to St. Patrick's Church. The Souther Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross will assist those in need. Β Β
The fire was reported shortly after 5 p.m. Monday. Β
Bisbee is about 90 miles southeast of Tucson.
