MESA, Ariz. β€” Authorities say they have arrested a Mesa man for trying to set fire to an unoccupied police vehicle as officers were eating a meal at a restaurant.

Police say 24-year-old Osvaldo Rogelio Oregel rolled up a piece of paper early Thursday morning, put it into the vehicle's gas tank and lit it on fire, causing damage to the gas cap and tank.

The fire didn't fully ignite. No one was injured.

No motive has been established.

Police suspect Oregel was impaired.

Investigators say Oregel was spotted by an officer and arrested outside the Mesa restaurant on suspicion of arson.

It's not known whether Oregel has an attorney.
