A probationer shot during a confrontation with a local probation officer Thursday has died.

The injured man died in hospital, Tucson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Pete Dugan confirmed Friday.

Authorities have not released the identities of the deceased or of the probation officer involved.

Dugan said TPD could not release the information and referred questions to a spokesman for Pima County Adult Probation. The spokesman, Kenneth McCulloch, did not return two messages left on his cell phone Friday.

The armed probation officer was trying to serve a felony warrant for probation violations when shots were fired at an apartment complex at 851 W Ajo Way, authorities said.

The officer was placed on paid administrative leave as a matter of policy while TPD investigates the incident.

McCulloch told the Arizona Daily Star Thursday that shootings involving probation officers are “very rare.”

Officers serve probation warrants several times a week in Tucson, almost always without serious incident, he said.
