When I hear Republican politicians and their supporters glibly admit that "there will be pain" from the massive cuts to essential and beloved programs that are being carried out with absolutely no public mandate, I ask, "Whose pain?" Not the billionaires and millionaires, except perhaps some who appreciate national parks, museums, libraries, the arts, and other victims of the Doge Chainsaw Massacre. No, it is the vulnerable, the poor, immigrants, the elderly, and Veterans who will bear the brunt of the pain. To what end? So that the rich can enjoy their tax breaks. So that the stories of America's multicultural past and present can be erased, replaced with only pablum tales of American exceptionalism. Aren't we as a nation better than this?
