Tucson firefighters visit with pre-kindergarten students at Soleng Tom Elementary School after the children' classroom filled with smoke Monday.

School fire drills paid off for pre-kindergarten students who knew just what to do when their Β classroom filled with smoke Tuesday morning.

Nearly 30 youngsters evacuated calmly with their teachers when a blaze broke out in a portable classroom unit at Soleng Tom Elementary School on the city's far east side.

The fire is being blamed on an accidental malfunction of the unit's heating and cooling system.Β

"No children or teachers were injured as they were all very well-rehearsed in what to do in the this type of situation," Tucson Fire Department spokesman Capt. Andrew Skaggs said.

Regular fire drills "kept the incident from becoming a parent's worst nightmare," he said.
