Pima College women's, men's soccer teams post easy victories

Yajaira Cervantes had a hat trick — of assists — as the No. 10-ranked Pima College women’s soccer team routed visiting Chandler-Gilbert 5-1 on Tuesday.

Cervantes assisted on Pima’s first three goals: by Samantha Mendez (6th minute), Ashley Martinez (10th minute) and Mendez again (66th minute).

Savannah Michel also scored for Pima in the 86th minute, and Marissa Garate scored off an assist from Aava Dagnino a minute later to wrap up the scoring.

Chandler-Gilbert (3-6, 3-5 ACCAC) scored its only goal in the 58th minute, cutting Pima’s lead to 2-1.

Goalkeeper Brooke Valencia had three saves for Pima (6-1-4, 6-0-3).

The Aztecs were set to host Cochise College at 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

Men’s soccer

The No. 4 Pima men’s team clobbered winless Chandler-Gilbert, getting a hat trick from Sean Ribadeneira in the 9-1 home win Tuesday.

The Aztecs (11-1, 8-1) stretched their winning streak to nine games. Pima took control early, scoring in the first minute on a Nathan Flores goal en route to seven first-half goals. The Aztecs scored all nine of their goals in the first 49 minutes.

Also scoring for Pima were Jihoon Song, Joost Hermeling, Donovan Rodriguez, Lae Soe and Wei Wei Mannos.

Ribadeneira scored his goals in the 25th, 26th and 40th minutes. His final goal put the Aztecs up 6-0.

Leonel Gutierrez had three assists in the win, twice assisting on a Ribadeneira score.

The Aztecs start a three-game road trip with a contest Friday at 4 p.m. vs. GateWay CC. The game will be played at South Mountain CC.

Volleyball

The Aztecs snapped a two-match skid with an emphatic win over South Mountain CC at home Wednesday night, winning 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16).

Alexia Hutchens and Addison Gilvin each had seven kills for Pima (6-10, 3-4). Alex Jacome added 16 assists.

Pima next plays a nonconference match at Park University Gilbert VR at noon Saturday.
