Arizona's Brayden Burries named to five-player Big 12 weekly honors team

Arizona freshman guard Brayden Burries was named to the Big 12’s weekly “Starting Five” honor roll Monday after scoring 28 points to lead Arizona to a 21-point win over Alabama two days earlier.

UA nominated Burries for both the conference’s Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, but Kansas’s Melvin Council swept those awards.

In Kansas’ 77-76 overtime win at N.C. State on Saturday, Council scored a career-high 36 points while making 9-15 3-pointers. He also had seven rebounds and dished out four assists with no turnovers.

Burries hit 5 of 10 3-pointers while scoring 20 of his 28 points in the second half, while Arizona turned a 41-39 halftime deficit into a 96-75 win over the Crimson Tide on a semi-away court in Birmingham.

The Big 12 added the “Starting Five” as a way to honor more players in the 16-team conference this season.

Joining Council and Burries on the five-player honor roll were BYU’s AJ Dybantsa, who averaged 27.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.5 steals in the Cougars’ wins over Clemson and UC Riverside; Texas Tech’s JT Toppin, who had 30 points and 11 rebounds in the Red Raiders’ 93-86 loss to No. 17 Arkansas; and West Virginia’s Honor Huff, who averaged 24.0 points while shooting 54.2% from 3-point range over two games.
