The Arizona women’s basketball team overcame a sluggish first quarter to defeat Grambling State 85-64 Sunday afternoon at McKale Center.

Guard Mickayla Perdue and forward Daniah Trammell scored 15 points apiece as the Wildcats improved to 3-0 under first-year coach Becky Burke.

Arizona trailed 22-13 after the first quarter. From that point forward, the Wildcats outscored the Tigers 72-42. Grambling shot 9 of 15 (60%) in the first quarter, 12 of 45 (26.7%) thereafter.

Defense led to offense for Arizona. The Wildcats scored 21 points off turnovers and had a 22-9 advantage in fastbreak points. Arizona also dominated in the paint, outscoring Grambling 54-24.

Leading 46-44 about midway through the third quarter, the Wildcats closed the period with a 17-3 run. Mireia Jurado’s 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter expanded Arizona’s lead to 66-47.

Guards Sumayah Sugapong (13 points) and Tanyuel Welch (12) also scored in double figures for the Wildcats. Jurado and Welch had eight rebounds apiece. Noelani Cornfield reached double digits in assists (10) for the second straight game.

Arizona next hosts NAU on Friday night. The Lumberjacks went 2-0 against the Wildcats last season, including a knockout game in the WBIT. The UA will honor all-time great Aari McDonald before and during the game.
