Arizona redshirt senior defensive end Tre Smith is out for the season with an injury, head coach Brent Brennan announced on Thursday.
Smith was initially ruled out for Arizona's upcoming home game against No. 18 BYU on Saturday. Smith had surgery for his undisclosed season-ending injury on Thursday, Brennan said.
Smith suffered a leg injury in Arizona's win over Weber State and missed the following game against Kansas State, but played against No. 14 Iowa State and last week's contest Oklahoma State.
"We love Tre Smith," Brennan said. "Awesome player and an awesome human being."
With Smith out, Arizona's starters at defensive end will likely be Dominic Lolesio and Malachi Bailey. Freshman Mays Pese The Wildcats have also used a four-linebacker lineup with linebackers with edge-rushing experience, like Chase Kennedy and Riley Wilson.
The 6-5, 262-pound Smith graduated from Red Mountain High School in Mesa and signed with San Jose State in 2020 and played four seasons for the Spartans, before transferring to the UA last season. Smith recorded 60 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss in two seasons at the UA.
Arizona (4-1) hosts 18th-ranked BYU (5-0) at Arizona Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m. on ESPN2.
