Southern Arizona tackle football teams are well represented in the AIA’s first rankings that were released Tuesday.

Desert View, off to the best start in school history, debuted at No. 2 in the 5A rankings. Marana, who finished last No. 1 in the Open and 5A, is seventh, followed by Flowing Wells at No. 16, Buena at No. 17, Mountain View at No. 18 and Sunnyside at No. 20. Cienega landed at No. 23 and just outside the playoffs as of now is No. 25 Tucson High.

In 4A, Sahuaro’s first ranking is No. 6. The defending state champion Mica Mountain is No. 8, Walden Grove at No. 22, followed by Douglas at No. 25.

The 5A and 4A tournaments are 24 teams each, with the top eight getting first-round byes. The big schools don’t have automatic bids for region champions.

At the 6A level, Salpointe Catholic is No. 12, the last spot in the Open tournament, which is now just 6A sides. In 6A, the top 12 teams go to the Open, eight more go into the first round of the 6A tournament and the losers in the first round of the Open go to the 6A tournament.

Desert View’s Ryan Vasavilbaso (12) fends off Sahuaro’s Bryan Williams (99) and buys time to make a throw and avoid the sack in the third quarter on Sept. 5, 2025.

2A and 3A rankings were released last week and 1A the week before.
