Salpointe Catholic's girls volleyball team will try to win its second consecutive state championship on Thursday, when it takes on Peoria Sunrise Mountain in the Class 4A state finals. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. at Phoenix Mountain Pointe High School, 4201 E. Knox Rd.

The third-seeded Lancers advanced to the final by upsetting No. 2 Glendale Cactus 3-1 (25-16, 21-15, 27-17, 25-22) in Tuesday's semifinals. Junior Madison Sundholm led the team with 17 kills, and senior Alanna Duarte added 15 kills. Senior Peyton Lewis finished with a team-high 22 digs.

Salpointe (32-6) has been leaning on its seniors all season. Duarte's 305 kills are first on the team, and Sundholm has 272 kills and a .316 kills percentage. Lewis leads the team in both aces (59) and digs (339).

The upperclassmen will try to make Salpointe history for the second straight season. The Lancers won their first-ever state crown a year ago, when the3y beat Phoenix Mountain Pointe 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-16). The victory was Salpointe's third straight over a higher-seeded team.
