Greg Hansen's Notebook: This entry is part of longtime Star columnist Greg Hansen's weekly notebook.

Subscribers can read this week's "Hansen's Notebook" in its entirety in the Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024, edition of the Arizona Daily Star (Page C2) — either in print or at Tucson.com/EEditionOr, dig into the Hansen archives at Tucson.com/Hansen.

Greg Hansen is the longtime sports columnist for the Arizona Daily Star and Tucson.com.

Oregon State and Washington State continue to use the term "Pac-12" for the conference they are expanding with the addition of San Diego State, Fresno State, Boise State and Colorado State.

Good try, but it won’t work. It should be renamed the Mountain Pacific Conference, or something similar.

Pac-12 commissioner Teresa Gould presents the 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament trophy to USC after the Trojans defeated Stanford in the title game on March 10 in Las Vegas.

It reminds me of when Sports Illustrated, for 50 years a must-read every week, downsized its product beyond recognizability and moved forward without legendary writers Curry Kirkpatrick, Dan Jenkins, Rick Reilly and Frank Deford, among others.

The magazine supposedly still comes out 12 times per year, but few have been fooled.

But I do admire the hustle and work of the “Pac-12s’’ new commissioner Teresa Gould. What an improvement on Larry Scott and George Kliavkoff. Gould has a strong Tucson connection: she is married to Ron Gould, an ex-Santa Rita High School football standout who is now the running backs coach of the Los Angeles Rams.
