You probably know Arizonans have a high skin cancer rate.
That's why Tucson dermatologist Dr. Christopher Weyer is offering free skin cancer screenings 8 a.m. to noon Friday, June 22 at Dermatology and Plastic Surgery of Arizona, 698 W. Wetmore Road.
There are only 15 to 20 spots left, so if you're interested in a free screening, make an appointment by calling 207-3100.
Bernadette Petravicius, the Tucson office manager and director of marketing, said each appointment will last about five to 10 minutes.
"We just want to help people in the community who may not have health insurance or be able to afford the co-pay," Petravicius said. "It's a very quick look over. He doesn't do any treatments but just lets them know any concerns and then provides a list of local dermatologists we recommend."
Weyer said people can come in for a full body or partial body check or to look at a specific spot.
"The biggest key with melanoma survival is early detection..." he said. "We don't want you not to seek care because you can't afford it."
The American Academy of Dermatology sponsors the free screenings. Beyond the recommended yearly screenings, everybody should watch moles for changes in size, color, shape and texture, including on your scalp, feet, hands and underarms. Weyer also suggested applying (and reapplying) ample sunblock and wearing sun protective clothing. Also try to minimize outdoor activities in the middle of the day.
Changes in skin or moles should be brought quickly to a dermatologist.
