Cyclovia Tucson, 2023

A cyclist pops a wheelie during Cyclovia Tucson along Sixth Avenue. Living Streets Alliance, a nonprofit, puts on the event to promote cycling and others forms of transportation.

Each year, local nonprofit Living Streets Alliance blocks off Tucson streets for a big ol' block party.

It's where we can cycle, roll and walk through activity hubs free of cars. The car-free day is part of the biannual Cyclovia, which helps us envision streets as living public spaces to better connect with one another.

This spring's Cyclovia takes place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 6 along the Treat Avenue Bicycle Boulevard, mostly between Broadway and Grant Road. See the full route here.

To be clear, Cyclovia is not a race or a competition, and you can join or exit Cyclovia at any point along the route. And it's free to attend!

This year, expect three miles of festivities including a helmet giveaway, live music, bike repair stations, games of Plinko, glassblowing demonstrations and lessons about native foods. These hubs are where you'll see folks blowing bubbles, hula hooping, riding bikes and enjoying an ice cream cone in the spring heat.

A beer garden is also on the schedule, in addition to 16 food vendors like Barrio Bread, Botanas Remix, Churros Inzunza, Ensenada Street Food and Patricia's Cuban Kitchen. Find information about the food vendors and activity hubs here.

The Cyclovia concept is said to have originated in Colombia, where streets are temporarily closed to cars, welcoming people to mingle on their feet, bikes or skates. Cyclovia made its debut in Tucson in 2010.
