Mod Pizza is opening its doors at 4386 N. Oracle Road Friday, April 22, and it's offering its first 52 customers a free individual sized pizza or meal-sized salad.

It's also donating 100 percent of proceeds from its opening day pizza sales to Tu Nidito.

Mod, founded in 2008 in Seattle, was one of the pioneers of the fast-casual pizza concept: Single serve 11-inch pizzas made to order with diners choosing the crust, sauce, cheese and other toppings β€” as many or as few as they want. Pies are baked in a really hot oven for 90 seconds to 3 minutes.

Mod is the latest fast-casual pizza chain to make inroads in Tucson. Others include Pieology and Fired Pizza , and locally owned Pionic. Coming soon: Blaze Fast Fire'd Pizza coming to East Broadway near Craycroft.

Mod Pizza's grand opening is at noon; a ribbon cutting ceremony takes place at 11:50 a.m. Friday.

Mod Pizza is the pioneer of the fast casual pizza segment, founded by husband and wife entrepreneurs Scott and Ally Svenson in 2008. The company has more than 115 locations across 16 states.
