A man was shot and killed Thursday night in the parking lot of a Tucson business when he drove his car toward two detectives who had been trying to pull him over for driving infractions, officials say.

The incident started before 8 p.m. when two state Department of Public Safety detectives say they tried to stop the a driver near East Speedway and North Craycroft Road for traffic violations, an agency news release says.

The driver fled and turned into the Summit Hut parking lot at 5251 E. Speedway and turned around so the car was facing the two detectives as they walked from their patrol vehicle toward the driver, the release says.

One of the detectives fired at the vehicle when they say the man drove at them.

The driver immediately crashed into a fence. A spinning tire caused a small fire at the rear of the car but it was extinguished by firefighters who were called to the scene.

The driver has not been identified and the investigation continues.
