Mark Jennings, with bell and coaches, raised almost $2,000 through a swim meet.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Mark L. Jennings.

Nominated by: Nick Poire.

Why: For raising money to help Poire’s family and daughter, who needs a heart transplant. Jennings, 16, coordinated a swim meet and raised nearly $2,000 for the family, Poire wrote in his nomination letter. The money will be used for his daughter’s medical expenses. “What makes this story even more amazing is I actually have never met this young man,” Poire wrote. “He simply heard of our family and our daughter on the news and chose to take this challenge on his shoulders.”
