A man who apparently took a hostage during a carjacking was shot during a confrontation with sheriff's deputies on a busy Tucson road.
A deputy fired one shot at the gunman, but it wasn't clear if the gunman shot himself, authorities said Wednesday afternoon.
The incident began with a carjacking report at about 1:30 p.m. in the 5000 block of East Valencia Road, which turned into a chase involving DPS troopers on Interstate 10.
About 15 minutes later there was a report of another robbery/carjacking at a house in the 4100 block of East Dover Stravanue, said Deputy Cody Gress, a sheriff's department spokesman.
At some point, deputies caught up to the vehicle at South Catalina Avenue and East Drexel Road and a chase began, Gress said.
There were two men inside the car, the gunman and an apparent hostage. The gunman was driving and pointing a gun at the other man and also pointing the gun at law enforcement officers.
The vehicle stopped on East Aviation Parkway near East 34th Street when the gunman got out of the car and was confronted by deputies.
The man had a gun and a shot was fired, Gress said. He said a deputy fired one shot, but there is also a possibility the gunman shot himself, Gress said.
The gunman was wounded and transported in unknown condition to Banner-University Medical Center, where he was in surgery. The hostage was also taken to a hospital to be checked out by doctors for precaution.
