A 4-year-old boy was killed in a DUI-related, three-vehicle crash Friday night that left several others injured, Tucson police said.
About 7:45 p.m., the boy was one of four children riding in a 2007 Toyota Corolla when the driver — their unidentified 27-year-old mother — suddenly crossed three lanes of eastbound traffic, went over the raised center median and smashed into a westbound Toyota Camry, police said Saturday in a news release.
The driver of a third vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta, was unable to avoid the crash and struck the Camry, police said.
Three other children — two 8-year-old boys and a 2-year-old boy — were in the Corolla with the boy who died at the hospital soon after the wreck, police said. The mother and three of the children remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
"Investigators believe that many, if not all, of the occupants of the Corolla were not secured in car seats or wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision," the release said. "The driver of the Toyota Corolla was determined to be impaired."
Neither of the drivers in the other two vehicles involved in the wreck was impaired, the release said.
The driver and passenger of a Toyota Camry were hospitalized with injuries later determined to be serious, but not life-threatening, police said.
The driver of the Volkswagen Jetta was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
