An armed man shot and wounded by a deputy earlier this month is now jailed on suspicion of multiple charges, authorities say.

Justin Wade Stone, 41, was shot about 11 p.m. Jan. 11 while detectives with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Fugitive Investigative Team was trying to serve an arrest warrant, the multi-agency group that investigates local police shootings said in a news release.

The incident started when Stone and Teresa Jean Sturges, 48, ran through a hotel where they were believed to be staying in the 8500 block of North Joplin Lane, near Interstate 10 and Cortaro Farms Road, the release said.

Stone was shot in the hotel lobby by a deputy who walked in while he allegedly pointed weapons at hotel employees, said the release from Pima Regional Critical Incident Team.

He was taken to the hospital and jailed after treatment, the release said. Stone was booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of multiple

felony charges, including aggravated assault, armed robbery, burglary, possession of a weapon and kidnapping, the release said.

Sturges also was jailed on suspicion of felony charges that include armed robbery, burglary and possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor, the release said.

No one else was injured.

The deputy who fired her weapon has been identified as Detective Jacqueline Deen Tefft, who has been with the department for 11 years.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team investigates local police shootings. The Tucson Police Department is the primary agency investigating the shooting. The sheriff's department is conducting a separate internal probe.

The completed investigation will be sent to the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
