A convenience store worker was shot and killed late Thursday night after confronting a shoplifter, Tucson police said.

Scott Dwayne Kennedy, 55, was working at the 7-Eleven store at South Columbus Boulevard and East 29th Steet about 11 p.m. when he was shot, Tucson police said in a news release.

Kennedy died at the scene.

Kennedy had "confronted a male shoplifter before the shooting occurred," police said.

The gunman fled.
