Two people were killed when a driver fleeing Border Patrol crashed his vehicle head-on into another on Interstate 19 near Nogales Friday morning, state troopers say. Two other people were seriously injured.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety gave the following account in a news release late Friday:
U.S. Border Patrol agents had attempted to stop a vehicle at about 4 a.m. as part of a human trafficking investigation. The driver fled, drove the wrong way into oncoming traffic on I-19 in Santa Cruz County, and struck another vehicle.
Two passengers in the suspect's vehicle were killed and a third passenger of that vehicle was seriously injured. The driver of the vehicle that was struck also suffered serious injuries.Â
The driver of the vehicle at fault, identified as Adolfo Hernandez Salazar, ran but was captured close to the crash scene by the Border Patrol agents. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Salazar was booked into the Santa Cruz County jail on suspicion of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and additional charges.
"Detectives are working to complete victim identification and next-of-kin notification, and victim details will not be released at this time," the news release said.
