Authorities have identified an armed Tucson woman who was shot and killed by police last month outside a home in midtown.

The shooting happened about 10 p.m. Dec. 29 when Leana Estrada, 34, refused police commands to drop the gun she was holding in the front yard of a house in the 1900 block of South Montezuma Avenue, near East 29th Street and South Alvernon Way, the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team said in a news release. PRCIT is a multi-agency group that investigates local officer-involved shootings.

Tucson police went to the home after callers to 911 reported a woman yelling and a gunshot, the release said.

Officers arrived to find Estrada standing in the yard holding a firearm. She ignored multiple requests to drop the weapon and was shot when police say she pointed the gun toward officers, the release said.

Estrada died at the hospital.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Chase Bryan, who has been with TPD for three years, and Dennis Simmons, who has been with the department for two years.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department is the lead agency for the criminal investigation, the PRCIT release said.
