A man was killed in a Tuesday morning shooting on Tucson's southwest side, and authorities were still searching for the gunman, authorities say.

The shooting occurred about 9:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of West Canada Street, near South Mission and West Drexel roads, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said.

Authorities said there was no threat t the public, but provided no details about the shooting or the suspected gunman early Tuesday afternoon.

The incident resulted in nearby White Elementary being placed into a soft lockdown.

Concerned parent Brian Flores wasted no time driving to the scene once he heard the school went on lockdown. His 6-year-old daughter was inside the school, and Flores said he felt compelled to ensure his child’s safety.

“The biggest thing you want to do is protect your child,” he said.

Between the lock down and the sheriff’s department’s quick response to the scene, the outcome has helped ease his nerves, he said.
