New details have been released in the shooting of a man by police last month on Tucson's south side, authorities said.

About 5:30 p.m. Jan. 23, officers found people sitting in a stolen vehicle parked near South Sixth Avenue and West Valencia Road, the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team said Tuesday in a news release. The multi-agency unit investigates local police shootings.

Later, officers worked with the police air unit to make a traffic stop, but the driver fled. The stolen vehicle eventually stopped at an apartment complex in the 6200 block of South Campbell Avenue, near East Bilby Road.

Two people ran from two officers at the complex and police chased one of the people they believed was driving the stolen car, the release said.

The man pointed a gun at the officers and pulled the trigger, but it did not fire, the PRCIT release said.

The gunman was then shot by one of the officers. They performed life-saving measures before he was taken to the hospital.

The officer who discharged his department-issued firearm has been identified as Officer Anthony Weeks, a 10-year veteran of the Tucson Police Department.

The alleged gunman has been identified as Frankie Felipe Silvas, 27.

The Pima County Attorney’s Office has charged Silvas with two counts of attempted first degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, weapons misconduct involving a weapons-prohibited possessor and narcotic drug sales, the release said.

The University of Arizona Police Department is the lead agency for the PRCIT investigation. The Tucson Police Department is conducting a separate internal investigation to ensure department policies were followed, the release said.

The Pima County Attorney’s Office for review the case once the investigation is complete.
