Editor's note: Lily Wexler's doughnut, "The Majestic Unitastic Pop in Your Mouth" doughnut, won the Social Media People's Choice Award. Bashas' announced the winners on its Facebook page on Tuesday, May 30. Way to support one of our own, Tucson! This story was originally published Friday, May 26.
Bashas' might create a unicorn doughnut. 🦄🍩😍
Maybe.
Lily Wexler, a 16-year-old junior-to-be at Catalina Foothills High School, is one of 13 finalists in the grocery store chain's doughnut flavor competition for ages 6 to 18.
The grand prize winner, to be announced Tuesday, May 30, will have their doughnut included in Bashas' bakeries throughout the month of June. National Doughnut Day is Friday, June 2.
We're rooting for Lily's creation: The Majestic, Unitastic Pop in Your Mouth Doughnut. She's also the only finalist from Tucson.

"She does stuff like this all the time," says Lily's mom Allison Wexler. "I don't even notice it anymore. I think we were walking through a Bashas' shopping for Cinco de Mayo, and she is like, 'Mom, can I enter?' ... Then I forgot about it and got an email saying, 'Your daughter is a finalist.'"
Inspired by Starbucks' Unicorn Frappuccino, Lily wanted that same rainbow magic in doughnut form.
So poof. She dreamed up the unicorn doughnut, described in the finalist announcement as a doughnut filled with "all the colors of the rainbow, includes sprinkles mixed into the batter and Fruit Loops on top of the glaze representing the spirit of the unicorn and glitter for shine."
Of the 100+ entries Bashas' received and 13 finalists selected, Lily's competition includes tasty temptations such as the Holy Cannoli, the Salted Caramel Mocha and the Pancake.
Although Lily didn't actually turn her design into an actual doughnut, Bashas' did. Judges will actually taste test the final entries and pick their favorites.
"I would make it more like a unicorn by putting edible glitter on it and having them crush up the Fruit Loops," she says, making modifications to the unicorn doughnut Bashas' created.
Bashas' will sell the winning doughnut through the month of June, and the winner will receive a $100 Bashas' gift card, a dozen doughnuts per month for the next 12 months and title of doughnut ambassador. All of the finalists will be awarded lesser amounts of gift card and doughnuts.
There's also a people's choice award, and you can vote for your favorite on Bashas' Facebook page. Voting is open until 11:59 Monday, May 29. That winner will get an additional Bashas' gift card.
"We are just encouraging kids to be creative and get into the kitchen..." says Ashley Shick, the director of communications for Bashas'. "We thought it would be a fun way to get kids in the kitchen, being creative and thinking outside-of-the-box."
And thus, the unicorn doughnut was born.
"I hope people get this feeling of a unicorn when you eat it," Lily says. "The name just popped into my head. It just came to me. I was thinking, 'Unicorn,' and then it came to me. All right. Let's stick with this one."
