The driver arrested in a crash that killed three University of Arizona students walking in a crosswalk near campus is no longer behind bars, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Louis John Artal, 19, bonded out of jail Nov. 12, after posting a $250,000 cash bond on three counts of second-degree murder in the Oct. 30 crash, according to court records.
Artal, also a UA student, was jailed after he surrendered to police soon after the students were struck in the DUI-related crash near Euclid Avenue and Second Street, police said.
Killed in the crash were: Katya Rosaura Castillo Mendoza, 21; Sophia Akimi Troetel, 21; and Josiah Patrick Santos, 22.
Artal was suspected of being impaired “by alcohol or drugs” and was speeding when the fatal crash happened, police have said. He was indicted on three counts of manslaughter and one count of felony leaving the scene of a fatal injury accident, records show.
He is set to appear again in Pima County Superior Court for a Dec. 19 hearing.
