The Hacienda at the Canyon, located on Sabino Canyon Road just north of River Road, is being built on 10 acres next to the site of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sanctuary. The sanctuary and the Stations of the Cross walking trail will stay open to the public and the St. Ann’s Convent will remain undisturbed.
The development, currently under construction, received a $35 million building permit and is pre-leasing. The project will have 154 independent living apartments, 72 assisted living and 40 memory care apartments. Future phases will include Casita homes.
This will be the fourth Tucson-area senior living community for Tucson-based Watermark Retirement Communities.
The company’s first development is The Fountains at La Cholla, 2001 W. Rudasill Road, opened in 1987 and is still owned and managed by Watermark. Its second community, The Hacienda at the River, opened last year on River and Hacienda del Sol roads. The Watermark at Continental Ranch, 8689 N. Silverbell Road, is also under construction and expected to open in the spring of next year.
The Hacienda at the Canyon’s opening is also scheduled to open in the spring.

Other construction activity around town includes:
- A $64 million permit has been issued for the Amazon Fulfillment Center at 6701 S. Kolb Road, in the Port of Tucson. The industrial project will have 857,388 square feet of warehouse and 265,049 square feet of office space.
- A 13-building, self storage facility is going up at 800 W. Ward Lane. The $2.5 million permit is for 53,000 square feet.
- Planet Fitness is building a $2.4 million gym at 4755 S. Calle Santa Cruz, near Irvington Road and Interstate 19.
- A $2.3 million permit for 21 multifamily units was given to La Frontera for its project at 2525 N. Balboa Ave. La Frontera also received a $1.9 million permit for apartments and community center at 40 E. Adams St.; a $1.6 million permit for its affordable housing rental homes at Sunnyside Pointe, 939 E. Equality Lane; and a $979,600 permit for rental units and community center at 2820 N. Castro Ave.
- Core Tucson Speedway pulled a $1.6 million permit for the foundation of a future student housing complex at 850 E. Speedway.
- Banner University Medical Center got a $600,000 permit for construction of its outpatient center at 3838 N. Campbell Ave.
- A $500,000 permit was issued to DHL for its 23,640-square-foot offices at 6855 S. Lisa Frank Ave.
- Mod Pizza got a $67,046 tenant improvement permit to move into a shopping center at 1218 W. Irvington Road.
