The mesquite tree was only a few feet tall when the Greene's moved into the house. Now it is surrounded by a heavy growth of prickly pear cactus. In front of the house is desert growth — barrel cacti and mesquite trees. Mrs. Greene's flower gardens are at the side and back.

Cedar paneling adds warmth to the decor at this end of the living room. Col. Greene designed the fireplace. Low window seats, covered with turquoise cushions, also serve as storage space for blankets, etc. Rugs are Indian. Wooden figures on the mantel were carved by Shehorn of Wickenburg. Mrs. Greene made the pillows from small Indian rugs. Cushions in the modern chairs are salmon color. The draperies have a beige and brown pattern.

Col. Greene's red leather chair in the living room was built by his grandfather who was a Congregational minister. When he turned to editing encyclopedias, the Colonel's father designed the chair to facilitate his work. The chair back can be lowered and the desk attachment opens up like a vanity. A wood panel can be pushed up to form a backrest for a book. There also is space under the "desk" for papers. The rifle at right was carried by a member of the Colonel's family who served in the Civil War. At the right of the picture is Col. Green's collection of pipes.

Col. Greene designed and did the work in the new kitchen. Spice cabinets cover the "outside" windows — Mrs. Greene loves to cook with spices. Counter at left is the bar.
