The Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge southwest of Tucson will be the site for a series of prescribed burns beginning Tuesday, June 7.

Officials with the refuge said the 2016 goal is to burn about 1,500 acres as a way of reducing the risk of wildfires by burning overgrowth.

Fire personnel at the refuge will monitor the weather and fuel conditions during the prescribed burns to minimize smoke impacts on area communities.

Burns will only be conducted during the day. Fire crews from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service will assist refuge personnel with the prescribed burns.

Heavy smoke will be noticeable for short periods around Arizona 286 and the Arivaca-Sasabe Road.

Smoke also may be visible in Arivaca, Sasabe, Three Points, Green Valley-Sahuarita, Nogales and Tucson.
