A 57-year-old woman was killed Friday morning when she was struck by a car near Tucson Mall.
The woman was identified as Maria Martinez-Saavedra, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
Shortly after 6 a.m., police and Tucson Fire Department paramedics responded to the 200 block of West Wetmore Road for a report of a serious injury crash involving a pedestrian. The crash occurred east of North Oracle Road.
Officers found a woman in the roadway who was receiving CPR from a person. Paramedics took over treatment, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, said Dugan.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured and remained at the scene.
Traffic detectives determined that the driver of a 2013 Chrysler 200 was traveling east on Wetmore from Oracle. The car was in the median lane, next to another vehicle that was traveling slightly ahead in the curb lane, Dugan said.
The woman, who was not in a crosswalk, began walking north across Wetmore. The vehicle in the curb lane narrowly missed the woman, said Dugan. As she entered the median lane, she was struck by the Chrysler, he said.
Dugan said the driver of the Chrysler said he did not see the woman until the crash occurred. Neither speed or impairments appear to be factors in the crash. No ย citations were issued, said Dugan.
Since January, there have been eight traffic fatalities in the city, compared to six at this time last year, police data shows.ย
