A man was shot and killed Thursday night while he and a companion were robbed by two men near the mouth of the downtown’s rattlesnake bridge, police say.
The slain man has been identified as Nicholas Encalade, 53, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman, Friday night.
The investigation has revealed that one of the two suspected in the robbery and slaying was found with gunshot trauma about 15 minutes later at North Fourth Avenue and East Ninth Street, said Bay. He is still at a local hospital.
Bay said the other assailant has not been found.
On Thursday at about 7:30 p.m., two men confronted a couple walking near the mouth of the bridge in Iron Horse Park, 75 N. First Avenue.
They robbed the pair then one of the robbers pulled a gun and shot the man, Bay said.
The man died later at Banner University Medical Center. The woman walking with him was not injured, said Bay.
About 15 minutes later, police were called to the area of Fourth Avenue and Ninth Street, where they found a man who had been shot. Detectives now say that man is a suspect in the slaying and robbery. Bay said the circumstances leading to who shot the suspect and why were still unknown.
The other assailant police are searching for is believed to be in his late teens, and is about 5 feet, 8 inches tall with a skinny build, said Bay. He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap and red bandana.
Detectives ask that anyone with information call 911 or 88-CRIME, an anonymous tipster hotline.
