A 53-year-old Tucson man has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder after police say he used a pickup truck to run down a man after an argument.

Just before 5 p.m. Saturday, officers were called to Barrio Anita, a historic neighborhood near West Speedway and Interstate 10, for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle, Tucson police said in a news release.

A 911 caller told dispatchers the crash near North Contzen Avenue and West Williams Street might have been an assault, the release said.

A man with life-threatening injuries was found by officers. He later died at the hospital.

The alleged driver, Eric Schumeister, eventually returned to his home nearby, but refused to come out for officers. Schumeister surrendered to police after two hours of negotiation, the release said.

Investigators say Schumeister and the unidentified slain man were in a fight, and the man then left on foot. Schumeister followed the man 2004 Ford F-350, striking him with the vehicle, the release said.

Schumeister was arrested on suspicion of first degree murder and was booked into the Pima County jail on $1 million bond.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line.
