Tucson Water and the Tucson Fire Department is set to conduct an annual controlled burn this morning at Sweetwater Wetlands, on Tucson's northwest side.

The burn is expected to begin about 8 a.m. in the area of West Prince Road and Interstate-10, officials say. Nearby residents might notice smoke, light ash, and the smell of burning vegetation.

The annual effort started in 1999 to help with mosquito abatement, provide training for regional wildlands firefighters and help manage invasive plant species.

A second burn is planned on Nov. 13.
