A 22-year-old was killed Friday evening when his motorcycle collided with a Chevrolet Silverado at the intersection of East Speedway and North Wilmot Road, Tucson police said.
Police gave the following account in a news release:
Michael Tyler Brown was riding a Honda motorcycle about 7:30 p.m. when he struck the passenger side of the Silverado in the intersection during the brief time when all directions of travel had a red traffic signal.
Traffic detectives used witness statements, along with video and roadway evidence, and determined the Silverado entered the intersection against the red traffic signal. Brown did the same and struck the Silverado at a high speed.
He was taken to a hospital where he died.
Police said Brown was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision .
The driver of the Silverado sustained minor injuries and remained on the scene.
Police said speed, and failure to stop for a red light by the Silverado and the motorcycle, caused the crash.
Police noted the Silverado’s driver said a mechanical failure with his vehicle had occurred at the time of the collision. Detectives are working to determine if this is the case. No citations have been issued.
This was Tucson’s 19th fatal motorcycle collision this year.
