Two people were killed Wednesday in a fiery plane crash at Marana Regional Airport, officials say.

At 5:12 p.m., a small airplane went off the runway and burst into flames, Marana Mayor Jon Post told the Associated Press.

Two people aboard the Piper PA-32 died. Neither had been identified early Thursday.

No other injuries were reported, and no other aircraft were involved, the Marana Police Department said in a news release.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating the crash.

It is the second deadly crash at the small airport northwest of Tucson in just over a year.

In February 2025, two people died in a midair collision.

Michael Reinath, 70, and Linda Gifford, 76, were killed when a Lancair 360 MK II and a Cessna 172 collided midair at the airport on West Avra Valley Road, west of Interstate 10.

Reinath, a former NASA engineer, and Gifford lived in Rio Vista, California.

Reinath’s aircraft, however, hit the ground near a runway and caught fire.

A plane occupied by a flight instructor and a student landed safely at the airport after the collision.

The Marana airport does not have a control tower but has said it plans to finish building one by 2029.

At uncontrolled airports, pilots are expected to maintain a safe distance from other aircraft and announce their position regularly over the radio on a common frequency, The Arizona Republic reported in its coverage of the 2025 crash.
